Rapid City Man Guilty of Escape

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Phillip Young Hawk, age 35, of Rapid City, appeared before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on August 3, 2012, and pled guilty to a charge of Escape from Custody. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 5 years' imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

In April 2012, Young Hawk left Community Alternatives of the Black Hills, where he was serving part of a federal sentence, to go to work and did not return. The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for November 26, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
